Everbloom Dahlias Breeding Project

All it took was a seed

plus a little sunshine, rain and love

for beauty to grow.

The captivating magic of a Dahlia

Since we first began growing and tending them, we have enjoyed a special relationship with Dahlias as plant kin in our garden.

We were instantly amazed by their beautiful fractal geometry and symmetry in what is such a diverse range of colours, shapes and sizes.

We are inspired by their multi faceted gifts - their beautiful blooms for gardens and creating floral arrangements both fresh and dried, their edible flowers and tubers, their resilience in hard times and their astounding generosity - all these gifts in just one season!

And to add to those gifts, we have seen the surge of  collective love for this beautiful plant and have been swept away on a magical journey down the path of bringing delightful new cultivars into gardens worldwide.

Our breeding principles

There is such excitement and joy in the simple act of planting a Dahlia seed, watching it grow, waiting for it to flower and being amazed by a beautiful bloom that you've never seen before!

Thanks to their interesting genetics, Dahlias have the ability to create unique baby plants that can look nothing like their parents.

We've found ourselves in the exciting search to find the jewels hiding in the infinite pool of Dahlia bloom possibilities! It's an addictive and deeply satisfying process full of joy, disappointment, curiosity and magic.

Walking through the seedling rows looking for new blooms is a favourite activity, year after year. It's exciting to find a new seedling that stands out and has potential!

Then it's a minimum of three years evaluating each cultivar's qualities, such as

  • Stem length
  • Stem strength
  • Bloom stem attachment
  • Bloom symmetry and form
  • Bloom facing direction
  • Plant growth characteristics
  • Tuber growth and storage needs
Then the process of multiplying our tubers, which we do organically (slowly), as we don't have time right now to make cuttings nor the inclination to do tissue culture.

We LOVE finding a Dahlia that's great for cutting.  We LOVE finding a Dahlia that can bring beauty to a garden.  We LOVE finding a Dahlia that's generous for the pollinators.

Thank you for supporting our work (and play) with Everbloom Dahlias.
